The history of Computer Science at the University of Ilorin dates back to 1993, when it began as a degree program within the Department of Mathematics in the Faculty of Science. In April 2004, the program was upgraded to a full-fledged department, giving rise to the Department of Computer Science.
With the creation of the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences in 2008, the department was relocated to this faculty, bringing the faculty to a total of five departments: Computer Science, Mass Communication, Library and Information Science, Information Technology (formerly Information and Communication Science), and Telecommunication Science. The curriculum of the department was reviewed in 2014, and the department has been operating on the revised curriculum since then. The department’s academic staff qualifications have significantly improved, with the number of Ph.D. holders increasing from two to twenty-two. The department has grown to have an academic staff strength of twenty-five, comprising FIVE professors, FIVE readers, FOUR senior lecturers, NINE lecturer I, and TWO assistant lecturers.
As a fully established department, it has received full accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) three consecutive times, in 2008, 2014, and 2019. Additionally, the department received full professional accreditation from the Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria (CPN) in 2014.
